Colombia: Earthquake - Aug 2026

According to information from the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 was recorded on Monday, August 10, 2026, in the morning, with its epicenter in the town of San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, located on the Colombian Pacific coast, at a depth of 82 kilometers. Although the epicenter was in the department of Chocó, direct impacts were also felt in the departments of Caldas, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca. Preliminary reports from media outlets and municipal governments indicate damage in the capitals and other municipalities of these departments: in Valle de Cauca, 3 people were injured in El Cairo and 2 died in El Zarzal, in addition to the collapse of 20 buildings and minor structural damage to 2 hospitals; in Risaralda, 18 people died; and in Chocó, 10 people were injured and 3 are missing.
