Indonesia: Earthquake - Aug 2026

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck offshore Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, on 15 August 2026 at 04:58 WIB. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 15 km, approximately 38 km northeast of Mbay. The tsunami warning issued for several coastal areas was officially lifted by BMKG at 07:31 WIB. As of 16 August 2026 at 00:00 WIB, BNPB reported 47 fatalities and 101 injuries. More than 5,000 people remain displaced, including 3,356 people in Sikka, 2,078 in Manggarai, and 500 in Nagekeo. Additional displacement was reported in Bima and the Selayar Islands. Preliminary assessments recorded 914 houses severely damaged, 126 moderately damaged, and 317 slightly damaged. At least 93 educational facilities, 36 health facilities, and 38 government offices were also affected. BMKG recorded 341 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 6.2.
